The Department "Prevention and Evaluation" pursues research on prevention of diseases and health problems and implements interventions and their evaluation in different settings and for various target groups.
We conduct applied research in the fields of epidemiology und health sciences. Research and transfer are based upon a population-oriented epidemiological approach using existing and emerging findings from research - including own epidemiological projects - on risk factors. Depending on the subject under scrutiny, methods of epidemiology, implementation and transfer research, evaluation research and/ or inequality and gender research are being employed and adapted.
The unit Social Epidemiology has its focus on the topics "Migration & Health" and "Gender & Health" as well as on aspects of evaluation research. For example, we conduct research on cancer in individuals with migration background, on different issues concerning health care equity in prevention and therapy, and on gender sensitivity of medical and epidemiological research.
The unit Applied Health Intervention Research directs its main attention towards evidence-based concepts for the implementation of results from research on risk factors, for example on nutrition and physical activity. We have a long-standing tradition of consulting institutions such as schools, child day care facilities and senior citizens' homes on science-based and practice-oriented nutrition concepts. The direct linkage of research and practical activities is the outstanding feature of the Department.
A new focus of the department is Environmental Epidemiology Studies and projects. This unit is involved in the assessment and prevention of health consequences of ionising and UV radiation in the general public or specific populations, including occupational and patient groups. The department collaborates in the Mainz Nagasaki Radiation Research Initiative, funded by the Federal Ministy of Education and Research.
Staff working in the department are currently organized in two interdisciplinary units, Social Epidemiology and Applied Health Intervention Research.
