The unit "Social Epidemiology" researches health inequity by both investigating its causes and by developing and testing approaches to reduce inequity. In order to achieve this goal we describe and analyse potential individual and contextual factors influencing health such as migration background, social status or sex. The communication of action-oriented conclusions for the reduction of health inequity and the evaluation of processes and effects are integral parts of our work. This interdisciplinary unit uses biomedical and epidemiological methods as well as social and cultural science approaches. Further goals are the advancement of research approaches and research access issues as well as theory development in the context of our core research themes.
In the research field "Migration and Health" we conduct epidemiological research on cancer and its prevention as well as on perinatal health among migrants. The tasks of the former working group "Women's and Gender Studies" are being continued in the research field "Gender and Health" with the current focus on "Gender Sensitive Research". Other research projects concern e.g. the evaluation and quality development in prevention and health promotion.
