Phenprocoumon associated bleeding

Description

Phenprocoumon (e.g. Marcumar®) is an anticoagulant which is for instance used to treat patients with venous thrombosis or artificial heart valves or to prevent cardiac embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. The most important adverse drug effects of phenprocoumon are bleedings. Phenprocoumon may cause bleedings including life threatening bleedings, even if it was adequately dosed and administered. There are only few studies that have investigated phenprocoumon use and bleedings, because outside of Germany warfarin is used instead of phenprocoumon. Results of the numerous warfarin studies are transferred to phenprocoumon although it is well known that the drugs have different pharmacokinetic properties.
Aim of this project is to investigate the incidence of bleeding events (cerebral, gastrointestinal, urogenital) in patients treated with phenprocoumon and to identify risk factors for phenprocoumon associated bleeding including comorbidity and concomitant drug use.
